Singapore gears up for fashion show festival

Starting March 21, Singapore will host a two-week fashion festival which promises an explosion of fashion events and a veritable choice of leading fashion labels from international and local designers.

A series of top names will showcase their latest designs, such as top French designer Azzedine Alaa, Russian couturier Valentin Yudashkin, Vera Wang, Singapore-born Andrew Gn, and also Indonesian designer Biyan Wanaatmadja.

This will be the third such festival in Singapore. The event attracted over 16,000 visitors last year, with top apparel from Salvatore Ferragamo, Christian Dior, Kenzo and Calvin Klein highlighting the festival.

The upcoming event is expected to lure some 60,000 people.

Headlining this year's festival is Alaa, who is known as the master of precision cutting and an arch-celebrant of female sensuality.

In a rare appearance outside France, Alaa will present the first-ever retrospective exhibition, representing 25 years of his cutting-edge designs, together with examples of his work as a sculptor alongside exhibits by the hottest contemporary Asian artists.

At the same venue, Alaa Photographic Exhibition will present photographs of supermodels who have worked with the designer, shot by the world's leading fashion photographers.

Other highlights of the events will be the presentation of the best haute couture collection of celebrated Russian fashion czar Valentin Yudashkin.

A member of the prestigious Paris Fashion Syndicate, Yudashkin has exhibited his work at the Louvre and other world centers of the fine arts.

The festival will also mark the return of Paris-based designer Andrew Gn back in his home town, presenting his pret-a-porter collection. With working experience with Emanuel Ungaro and Pierre Balmain, Gn is distinguished by his neat and simple cuts, and bohemian chic look.

Other designers who will participate in the fashion festival include Indonesian designer Biyan Wanaatmadja, Chloe, Etro, La Perla and Vera Wang.

This festival will also be the first event where the spring/summer collection presented on the catwalk will be able to be found in the boutiques right away.

An integral part of Singapore Fashion Festival 2003 is the Mercedes Asia Fashion Week, which will showcase creations by 15 high-flying Asian designers pre-selected by an international panel of judges, including Alaa and Gn.

Aged between 21 and 35, five out of 15 designers will be chosen to get a free trip to visit the studios of Alaa and Gn in Paris.
