Fashion designer slams Kate Moss Models

Sonia Rykiel says Kate Moss is 'complicated' and full of 'difficulties'.

The Paris-born fashion designer - who was recently awarded the prestigious Legion d'honneur for her 40-year contribution to French fashion - only worked with the British supermodel a handful of times because she found the experience so hard.

When asked which models she enjoys dressing, Sonia said: "They do what they do. I did a little with Kate Moss but not much because she has always been a very complicated girl and when she arrived in Paris there were always difficulties.

"No, the women I want to dress are my daughters, sisters and granddaughters."

Sonia admits fell into the world of fashion'by accident' after marrying her husband Sam Rykiel, who owned a small Parisian boutique, and then falling pregnant.

During Sonia's first pregnancy in 1962, she found unable to find the perfect jumper so she employed one of her husband's suppliers in Venice to make up a design of her own. The tops were eventually stocked in the boutique.

She told Britain's The Daily Telegraph newspaper: "Clothes never interested me - only later did they begin to amuse me. I felt that I was making fun of these women, so I couldn't understand it when they came back for more.

"To start with it was about trying to find the right clothes for me, then when I realised that other women liked them I thought I might as well continue. I like playing with fashion."

Despite her initial lack of interest in the field, Sonia - who is famous for her use of stripes and knitwear - has formed a lifelong success in her career as a fashion designer and takes a rather pragmatic view of her success.

When asked if she thinks there is such thing as 'intelligent fashion' she said: "All I can say is that it's what I try to do. It doesn't matter one damn bit whether fashion is art or not. You don't question whether an incredible chef is an artist or not - his cakes are delicious and that's all that matters. Fashion is there to serve a purpose."
